A good friend wrote me this response:

"It's down to basic biology and supply and demand - the man is looking to get his end away, and the woman has the equipment he needs for that. She, on the other hand, doesn't have the same urges, and so can afford to wait. So, she's got the supply, you've got the demand --> you have to "pay" to get in the game. It's all down to your statement:

I did not argue as I wanted to make a good impression.

She wasn't as worried about making a good impression, she didn't need to.

Obviously the above is a gross oversimplification and generalisation. In the end, though, the right person will not want to fleece you out of your hard earned dosh just for you to enjoy the presence of their company.

Amazingly, in Holland, going Dutch is usually the norm - it's because it keeps the relationship equal, and the woman isn't "in debt" to the man for dinner -- any after dinner fun and games take place on equal terms ."
