Personally l pay half or if he insists on paying then l buy the drinks the rest of the evening. I just dont feel comfortable with someone else forking out for everything, and l dont wanna feel as if l "owe" them anything!!

Even before my ex boyf and l split we took turns at getting the bill, only fair. I can well afford to buy dinner for myself therefore l should pay for myself!

I hear what you say.
Indeed you are a very understandable young lady.
Unfortunately majority of Iranian ladies do not treat like this which is very shameful.

I think it's common in patriarchal societies.

I hear what you say, but it is very difficult to sit round the table and then decide to leave the place because the food price is very expensive.

No, it's not. The first time might be a bit awkward, but if you are confident and have your reasons, it's easy to do. One way to avoid that level of discomfort is also to ask to see a menu beforehand so you can decide before you sit down - it is very rare that i will sit in a restaurant without having seen a menu/price list so I have some idea what i'll be paying. It's one of the things you learn quite quickly as a backpacker/traveller, where money is often tight!

Likewise, never assume "free" stuff you are given without asking is actually free. I know places where the food is reasonably priced, but they give you bread &/or water etc, which you assume is free, but you then get charged silly amounts for later if you use them.

unfortunateluy in Iranian culture to do such an act of changing the restaurant because of it's tage price some times interpret as an insult to Iranian lady or her social status in the society.
Usually Iranian ladies EXPECT men (Iranian or non-Iranian) to pay all the expenses without any consideration to contribute to the total cost of food.
I have never seen this kind of behavior among American or European ladies, although always there are few exceptions.

Well as my wife's credit card is in my name, I end up paying no matter what and no matter who she's having dinner with.

I guess you have a lovely wife who trust you more than 100%.
So treat her very nice and be loyal to her always.

Then, would you like to change your place with them?
I wonder!

If the Iranian constitution changes I may consider it.:) But it does not look likely considering that the election for this March is being rigged. Lovely country.:) Pity about the government.
