Hello people,

i am currently doing some volunteer work/travel in Peru. Its great and there are much more opportunities for interesting volunteer work oppening up when you are in Peru as it might appear planning the trip in ones home country. So i'll encourage anyone who whants to do this sort of thing!

However as I said before I'll want to do some travelling later on, probably in May/June. I have got a friend living in Hawaii and of course it would be great to visit him, yet i can't afford the flight.

Does anyone know a cheap way to get to Hawaii? Like working on a cargoship...whatever crazy ways there are!

Looking forward to your recommendations!

There are none.

You need to fly to LA and then connect from there.

You don't really have any options. I don't think there are any flights in SA straight to CA, you'll have to go through California as 'SamSalmon' has stated. I don't even know if cargo ships even travel a Peru - Hawaii route. I don't think there are any. I believe any ships that pass through Hawaii must dock in California before heading elsewhere (Panama Canal, Alaska, Argentina). So hypothetically, if you were to get onto a ship you'd still have to go to California anyway and head to Hawaii. It's not sensible. I doubt you'd get a job on a cargo ship transporting items such as coffee beans to the US. There has to be something illegal during a process such as this. Cargo ships are targeted by US authorities due to the number of illegal shipments they bring into the states (Drugs, people, etc.) and you'll be interrogated if you're found on one of these ships (which tend to be sketchy to begin with)
