melbourne or sydney?

hello.. i know this question has been askd before. . but my priorities are a lil different... i want an affordable and safe city.. with part time jobs easily available for a student... i am pretty timid so i want suggestions for a safe place.. plz help.. thanks:(

I think you'll find that both cities are quite safe. I don't think the job market would be much different in either city. On the affordability front, I think Melbourne has a slight edge (at least in rental prices), but both cities can be quite expensive. If you want a really "affordable" city, then Adelaide (South Australia) or Hobart (Tasmania) are probably the best bets. Only problem is that you would have to live in Adelaide or Hobart (just kidding, they are smaller cities - Hobart is MUCH smaller -, but also have their charms)

As a final conclusion, because I have a bias towards my home city Melbourne, I'll suggest Melbourne ;)

Well I have to agree with Melbourne. I studied abroad there and loved it. Sydney is more of big city with little charm. Melbourne I believe has much more to offer and is more "australian" in my mind.

Tourist-wise I preferred Melbourne over Sydney. The impression I got was that Melb's friendlier and not as messy. Sydney has attractions like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge etc but those things didn't do it for me.

thanks so much guys.. then melbourne it is! ... ok now can i bring along my spouse (if i marry before going to australia?)... if i apply for a student visa? i heard of something like that...
