can I buy health insurance or dental insurance while in NZ?

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific can I buy health insurance or dental insurance while in NZ?

I bought travel insurance but that doesn't really cover too much. are there any companies that sell health insurance to contract workers or freelance workers that don't get health insurance through a company. I'm going to be there for at least a year maybe two, maybe more if all goes well.

Is this even an option for an american? I ask because I currently do this in America.

Hi, i used to work for the ACC in new zealand on my WHV, and they cover everyone even visitors. a friend of mine (also on the WHV) fell and smashed up his front teeth and the ACC helped pay for a large chunk of his dental treatment.
heres what they say
The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) administers New Zealand’s accident compensation scheme, which provides personal injury cover for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand. In return people do not have the right to sue for personal injury, other than for exemplary damages.

So, technically, you're saying that we don't need to purchase insurance prior to coming to NZ if in fact we have a working holiday visa. Would that be correct??? If I can save myself 3 or 400 bux then that would be great!!!

i am not recomending not getting travel insurance. Travel insurance usually covers more than just physical injuries.
i think its a must have.
Cool Paul said he already had insurance but was worried that it mightent fully cover him. i would look on the ACC as a safety net for what your own insurance might not cover.

hmm I'm not too sure that the ACC is exactly what I'm looking for that does look good anyway...just in case an accident does happen

what worries me is that everything I see about travel insurance reimburses you for emergencies or hospital bills. I'm going to be gone for 16+ months. I'm looking more for insurance to help pay up front. something more preventive. In theory I should go to a dentist 2 or 3 times while I am down there, for cleanings and check-ups. Going to the dentist only when you have a problem is exactly what you're NOT supposed to do.

I know there are freelance workers in NZ. they can't possibly all be uninsured.

Thanx for the advice, peeps. It's probably better that I just get it anyway which is what I was going to do in the first place. I think I'll just stick with the plan!!! ;)
