[quote=Mel.]The downside of democracy is that you have to put up with stuff you don't agree with.

If everyplace was a democracy... But that aside, what about the brainwashing?

In Ireland recently a 15 year old orphan girl got pregnant. She was going to have the baby until she found out that it would be so deformed that it would only live a few mintutes after the birth. The girl wanted to go to England to have an abortion because abortion is illegal in Ireland. Against our religion it is. Because she was not yet at the legal age where she could make a decision to travel to another country without a guardian agreeing the nuns at the orphanage forced her to have the baby. Ireland is a democracy and women are still being forced to have babies against their will because of religion. Where human rights are concerned I dont think is it enough to say that what the majority wants goes. If it was left to the average Joe Soap to stand up for human rights..... Thank f*ck for organisations like the UN and Amnesty.

You're opening a new can of worms, Mel. It can be argued that the girl's fundamental human rights were violated--that someone else's rights usurped hers. My maternal great-grandmother died of a hemorrhage eons ago when she tried to put a stop another mouth she couldn't afford to feed--because abortions were illegal here in the 1920s. So I'm certainly not arguing against you on that point.

I see where you're going, but my original point was that the quotes you're digging up are from two-bit anonymous fundamentalists. You are giving them a forum here. You're spreading their word for them.

And to clarify, here's the Robert Kennedy quote I was looking for: "What is objectionable, what is dangerous about extremists, is not that they are extreme, but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say about their cause, but what they say about their opponents."

where gays and non-believers are not thrown with their heads down from the nearest minaret

So what do Buddists and Hindus say about gays and non believers?
Would u also state what these religions say about women too so we dont leave anybody out?

You're opening a new can of worms, Mel.

U know I would never do something like that, Tway.

And why not give them a forum. Better to know what we are dealing with, I say.
But dont worry I give people who are full of love a forum too.
Listen to everybody is my motto.

Haven't checked that one Mel, don't have the time nor the desire to do that. Every single religion has its positive and negative aspects, as has every single country considering human rights.
But being an atheist is not always positive as well, now I have to sleep late again on Sunday instead of sitting in a cold church. Someone has to do the hard work

Utrecht, a person can be too openminded which is a type of closed mindedness in my opinion. Eg. U wont have an opinion because everything is both good and bad without even finding out the extent of the goodness and badness. It is not acceptable to accept everything after justifying it with this philosophy.
Just because something is in some way good does not mean that it cancels out its abusive parts.

So, what are you saying here
Or is this discussion because of discussion?

Or is this discussion because of discussion?

Now u are just trying to distract me from my rant and I wont put up with it.
Go, and dont come back until u have found out what the Budists and Hindus have to say about gays, non believers and women. U cant just tease me and then expect me to settle for an answer like there is good and bad in everything. :)

Better to ignore people who talk like that rather than give them a forum to argue in.

Uhuh... Look at what you just did.
