I will be setting off on the 6th of May and will be without a job. What is the situation with the dole (unemployment benefit). I think the official title is "Job Seekers Allowance", therefore that would suggest that I'd have to be actively seeking a job & not off travelling the world.
What do you guys recommend?
as far as I know, with the job seekers allowance you have to 'sign on' every other week which means visiting the DSS office, so I 'm not sure there is a way round it if you are travelling and not able to sign. And as you mentioned, you are supposed to be actively seeking work - when you go and sign on they want prove of your job search efforts, any interviews etc.
You cannot claim JSA if you're not available to work.
I've looked into this further for you. You can only be away from home for up to two weeks. The only exception is if you can prove that you are actively seeking work in another EU country but even then there is a three-month limit.
Bear in mind, welfare benefits are not intended to fund travelling. You will need some other source of money.
