i too am going to the west coast on america. I am going for 9 weeks in september. Having not gone yet i cant give u too much advice but i can help you with visas.

I dont know you or your personal life but i notice you live in the UK. Well british citizens can qualify for the visa waiver program providing they meet the criteria. I wont list it all because if you type visa waiver program into google youll find plenty of info and you can always ring the embassy as i did but basically if your a british citizen going for under 90 days and dont have a criminal record you shouldnt need a visa. As stated there are soem other criteria but youll get that for yourself

have fun

$8000 is pretty decent. if you don't go out for food and drinks too much that will last awhile. how long is your trip? when are you going?

stick to hostels and you'll have a good time. you'll meet plenty of cool people out there.
