Hi Friends,

I am a 22 yr. old Indian male and am planning my first international trip. This would be sort of backpacking across Europe, I intend to start by getting a working vacationer's visa for UK stay there for abour 3 mnths and then move on to France -> Italy -> Germany -> Scandinavia and then back home. I want to take this in March next year.

My questions are:

1. Can I get the visa at access points to other countries.
2. What other European countries provide the working vacationer visa sort of thing.
3. Can anybody whos been on working vacation to UK, provide me with help about what sort of jobs do we get. How easy is it to get a job, in the first place.

I intend to apply for my pasport in August, is there a rule that the pasport has to be atleast some time old before applying for a visa.

Please read this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement

In order to travel in Europe you'll need a Schengen visa. You can apply for this visa at the embassy in London. Getting the Schengen visa is a bit tricky for an Indian citizen, they are very strict. You'll need to show them that you got enough money to travel around. Sometimes they force you to book and pay for all your accomodation and your train, bus and plane tickets in advance for the whole trip before they issue the visa.

There is no other European country that has a Working Holiday Visa agreement with India. Only the UK offers this.

thnks a lot dude.

but this generates a couple of more questions.

1. Can I apply for this visa at british embassy in india.
2. How much money is considered enough money to travel around (A rough estimate).

Read the above link again and you'll see that the UK is not part of Schengen. Thus you cannot apply for a Schengen visa at a British embassy. The place to ask is the French, Belgian, German, Austrian or Czech or whatever embassy in London.

Minimum amount that is asked for is 50 EUR per day. However if you only got that little they will make it hard for you to get the visa. It would be much better if you had at least double that. The fact that you'll have a UK residency and work permit will also make it easier, which is why you need to apply in London.

No my question was .... can I apply for Schegen visa sitting in India, at Italian Embassy or German or wherever. Also I am an Indian resident and have never travelled abroad as yet, so no question of being a british resident or having a british work visa, but i do plan to have a WHM visa for britain, is that considered a work visa. Anyway maia, you have been a great help.

Yes, you can apply for the Schengen visa in India at a Schengen embassy.

But...

You won't get the Schengen visa unless you have a UK working holiday maker visa in your passport.

It is also much easier to apply for a Schengen visa at the embassies in London. The UK is part of the EU, regulations are a lot less strict when you hold UK residency (ie you are in the UK on a working holiday visa).

In theory you can apply for the Schengen visa in India, but in practise you should do it in London.
