Some new features have gone live today.

The message center change is probably of most interest to everyone. You will now find a link in your message centre to "Send a Message" (previously you would have to find the user, THEN find the link). It will take you to a message form with a new "To" field added. You can then just type the username of whomever it is you want to send a message to and it will get there. What's even cooler is that you can click on the "TO" label to show a popup of your mutual friends, so you can quickly add them. You can even add more than one of them, making it possible to message all your mutual friends in one hit. Spammers shouldn't benefit from this, because of the mutual friendship requirement.

Mutual friends? Yep. We've extended the friends list to now firstly show those friends who have also added you as a friend, ie.. mutual friends. Listed below that are the people you have added as a friend and listed below that are people who have added you as a friend.

Finally, using the "Email It" link in the left sidebar, you can now send emails to whole groups of people. Look for the "Send to a group" link.

Man, how many years has multi member PM'ing been on the to do list anyway? :) Glad to see it live and as always, any suggestions on improvements welcome. One thing that is high up on the to do list is to have the input field auto-complete member names from your mutual friends list as you type. This is default in most email systems and I found myself missing it when testing this (it's never quite good enough is it LOL).

How old is TP now?? Guess it wasn't on the list when you two were it's only members. So, let's just say it's been on the list since about 10 days after the launch of TP.

Way cool!!! The "Friends" thing is a bit scary though... I have 33 fans and I've never heard of 13 of them. Guess I better go look at some profiles...

It actually was kind of good for me to see the list so I could go through it and add some of my fans as friends :) I'd obviously been slacking off in the 'adding friends' department myself till now

Must admit i hadn't even occured to me to do either - i had only added a very few people (8, it seems) who at one timre or other i was sending a lot of PMs to.

...

I'm glad it's not just me. I seem to have 43 "fans" and have never heard of 37 of them (not good if you are as paranoid as I am), whilst one has a profile that looks potentially like a certain Japanese person who i hoped would never find me online

So I'm going to be a bit curmudgeonly here and mutter about not wanting travellerspoint to turn into yet another freakin' social networking site, which the extension of the friends list feature is bringing a step closer again. I just wish there was a way to opt out of it all. Feel free to ignore me on this, as I can understand why it's a useful/cool/wanted feature for other people to have - I just need to get it off my chest.

There, that muttering done :) I have a bug report, in that profile pictures don't show in the "is a fan of" section (while "no profile pic" does work).

I also just noticed that adding or removing friends only takes a GET request, which is rather bad. POST operations really should be used for things which change state. Remember fasterfox and google web accelerator.

Apart from the bug of missing profile picture in the "is a fan of" section as mentioned by Sander, one other thing has been omitted - the Last Login. Is that intentional?

We were thinking of you Sander, but in the end I don't think this is too bad is it? The main reason we actually made the changes to the friend page is that we decided to only allow multiple PM'ing to mutual 'friends/contacts' (which seems the safest and most useful). But there was no actual way of seeing who were mutual friends other than on the message sending page. Likewise, you couldn't see who might nearly qualify for mutual pm'ing (I don't want to make the qualify there sound like a big deal, but guess you know what I mean about already having added you as a friend). We did decide against notifying you every time someone adds you as their friend though Although we were just discussing yesterday that this might be useful, hehehe (don't worry, we'll opt you out by defaut ). Your opt out is interesting; what would you want to opt out of? Allowing others to add you as a 'friend'? Definitely open to suggestions here because I know there's a few things about social networking sites that bug me too. However we already have a very social site (yeah, you all rock!) with just about everything being publicly visible already (unlike on most social networking sites). Making it a little easier to track what those you stay in touch with most are doing/recommending seems to make sense to me. Let's say a 'mutual friend' or someone you are a fan of recommended a hotel or hostel, then I know that would weigh more with me than if it was some unknown reviewer on another site...

Woops; fixed that up. Was actually an interesting little bug having to do with duplicate naming of queries....

Will get onto get/post too....

I think it was a design decision (the boxes are half as wide as they used to be so at smaller browser sizes get a bit bunched up), but I'm not 100% sure. It might also be that having that info pulling in publicly was re-considered...
