Last month we ran a competition for the best photos fitting the them of "Red" . With that competition now done and dusted, we want to up the stakes.

This one is a little less broad. The theme is "Food"

Just like last month, you can enter up to 3 photos, by tagging them as "foodcompetition". This month though, we're filtering the submissions somewhat by only allowing featured photos. This should make it easier to vote, as you won't have to look through 200+ photos and instead will only look at those that are already considered feature-worthy by the photo moderators.

The winner will be decided by popular vote, with voting running from March 9 to 24. Get your photos in before then!

Once again, there's a $50 Amazon voucher up for grabs. The winner and runner-up will also receive an increase of their monthly photo upload limit to 200MB.

Congrats to last months winners and good luck to everyone entering this month. I think I might have a photo or two that I'll enter!

Ow, that's putting an awful lot of pressure on us photo moderators.
Probably needless to say (at least, for me this is common policy, and I assume the same goes for us all), but just so it's out in the open: No featuring your own photos as a photo moderator! :)

Hehe, I already entered mine. I don't expect them to be featured though if I'm not allowed to feature my own photos - Sander is so strict!

Sam, I think I see a loophole....

Looking at your title, I don't see Janitor under your name. Sander didn't specifically say Janitor and/or Landlord (Overlord) so I think there's a backdoor to this one... Mwahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!

Isa now sneaks away very quickly before Sander magically reappears...

Hmm, you know, though I was mostly joking in my previous comment about this putting pressure on us, I really am finding this problematic.
There's a ton of new photos uploaded now for this competition which are great photos, but which don't add much of any country-specific or travel-related value. Should I feature them because of the former reason, or not feature them because of the latter reason? (Probably the best example of this, Sam, is your birthday cake photo. I love the shot - the lighting is perfect - but featuring it would detract from the value of the Norway photo gallery, while these country-specific featured photo galleries have been my main focus so far in my featuring activities. What's more important: recognizing quality for the benefit of the competition, or using the same criteria as always for the benefit of the country galleries?)

*is really glad he's not the only one who'll be featuring photos*

btw, Sam: you've nominated five photos, rather than the three allowed in the photo competition rules. :)

I know what you mean Sander. When I was uploading some of those shots I was thinking "well, they're kind of interesting/fun for the competition, but they really shouldn't be featured". In the end I wanted to upload them anyway (some are for laughs and clearly not featurable quality) and I'm not too bothered either way. But it does pose an interesting dilemma because I think a good food shot could have nothing to do with being a good travel shot....

So these pictures of our food should include some indication as to which country they were taken in? I saw many that said where, and some actually had signs in the back ground. I could take one with the flag in the background or something. Is that the kind of thing you are looking for?

Tokes: Not quite. Photos should be "feature-worthy" to be actually featured, which is what will make them move on to take part in the voting stage of the contest. What makes a photo feature-worthy is somewhat subjective, and us six photo moderators all have our own slightly different take on it. We actually had quite some discussion about it back in October last year, without a clear resolution.
There's general guidelines such as the photo needing to be reasonably sharp, not have massive borders/framing/watermarks (small ones are acceptable), and not being the twentieth near-carbon copy take on a subject which has already been shown off with more quality in previously featured photos. But beyond that, we look at if a photo is a good travel photo (or just an absolutely exceptional photo). There's a thousand and one things which can make a photo a good travel photo, but one of the most common ones is when the photo will say something about the country in which it was taken. Does it portray something which will make people want to travel to that country? (Such as a gorgeous landscape, famous monument, ...?) Does it portray something immediately recognizable to people who have travelled to that country? (Such as a particular type of bird or flower or custom you can't find anywhere else?) Does it portray something about the experience of travelling? Does it....? Etc, etc.
Featuring photos is something which has been done here at travellerspoint for nearly the entire existence of the site; but now the process has been given extra weight as it's doubling as the first selection step for this contest, to help ensure that the total number of photos to vote for isn't as overwhelming as it was with the red contest.

You can look at the galleries of featured photography per country to get an idea of what type of photos have been featured in the past.

You can also see which foodcompetition photos have been featured so far (24 of the 103 submitted foodcompetition photos at the time of writing), but keep in mind that featuring photos is a continuous process, so that this will change (many more photos will probably be added, and some could be removed) - and the competition will probably mean that we'll do a final pass over all entries to try and ensure no high quality travel photos have been overlooked.
