Ok looks like I'll go for this one, http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonsd870is/
unless someone has a huge objection!

I like the 28mm wide angle, it really makes a difference in those shots in a cramped room. Image stabilization gets great reviews as does most of the other features of this camera. Nice big 3.0in screen, no view finder, hope thats not a problem, but reviewers dont seem to think so.

Purdy, yes its probably toping out your price range, but you have the fancy DSLR, and this will be my only camera, so i think its a good compromise of compact and quality.

Sander thanks for steering us towards the Cannons.

Yes I object !!!
Ok, it wasn't out when i baught mine so i'm just jealous.
Great choice

Enjoy it, just a little piece of advice get some screen protector plastic for the LCD on the back. It'll save any unwanted damage as the screens are easily damaged. Carry a spare battery too, I was glad when i did my enduro in South Africa. The Canon Ixus75 that i got took an absolute hammering it looks beaten up but works as good as new.

Ok - you guys have convinced me!!

I havent gone for the newest top of range brand spanking newest model - cos l dont need half the features to be honest, so l went for the Canon Ixus 70 - reviews seem to be pointing that it will be perfect for want l want it for and l got it on Amazon for £114.

Just have to wait until Friday now until it arrives!!

DONT ANYONE CRITISIZE - lve bought it now!!!!

Ha sorry, objection overruled!

good idea on the screen protectors.

Whens your next motorcycle tour? I bought a BMW R1200GS and did a few trips on her here in the US, great bike, but a little too big for me in the boonies. Looking to do some riding in NZ too.

If I manage to take hols this year, i'd like to do the hymalayas. EnduroAfrica was awesome - great people & sights plus we raised over $800,000 for charity. the Hymalayan one isn't for charity, but i think would be a great opportunity for some challenging photo's.

I know this is a bit offtopic, but I'd agree that the GS is way too heavy for any real offroading. It's more a tourer with light capabilities.

NZ, is the greatest scenic touring avaliable (not that i'm biast).

I'm hoping to take my bicycle on to India and get on up to the Himalayas. Id love to get an Enfield and tour around a bit too. Bikes in NZ seem to be pretty pricey. What race tracks are out there?..ok now we're waaay off topic, sorry Purdy.

For those in the US, I found this site. techondigital.com (direct link removed) Cannon 870 for $229!!! Hopefully everything comes through. I ordered a 1 gb card with it and then when I put the order through, I got an email telling me I had to call to confirm the order. Called and it sounded like one of those dirt cheap electronic shops up in NYC, everyone talking and shouting in the background and they had that umm abrupt (rude) way of talking to you. "ok sir that very good camera, but you must buy fast card with it, I give you very good deal, very good". "well im not really comfortable changing my order without a conformation". "i don't don't care, you do what you want, Im just telling you its very good deal, listen Im giving you the carrying case for free too". I ended up going for the 1GB Ultra VI card he was trying to sell me. regular price $299, their price $179, but he sold it to me for $99!

I hope this doesnt come back to bite me in the ass, but I did get the conformation that it was sent today.

Uhm, the regular price of that card is about $10-$20. :( (That's assuming it's the SanDisk Ultra II. Ultra VI doesn't exist. Extreme IV exists, but not in 1GB. It might be an absolutely unknown brand marketing as Ultra VI, though, in which case the actual cost of the card is probably closer to $5.)

If it sounds too good to be true, it almost always is! You fell for a bait 'n switch shop out of Brooklyn, hook, line and sinker. :( You paid $328 for ~$305 worth of camera equipment, and then you still have to hope you'll actually get all the bits that should come with the camera.
(This is how they operate; they advertise unrealistically low prices for cameras at dodgy websites (next time you buy something at a domain you've never been to before, google the domain in combination with the word "scam" - that gives you about 7000 hits). Then they call you, or have you call them to "confirm" something, and then they start upselling. (Sometimes they even try to sell you things which should've been included with the camera by default (lens caps, batteries) for ridiculous prices.) If you're strong and don't want any, the camera you ordered is suddenly mysteriously out of stock, and you'll never receive it.)

Ok well thanks for that info. I wish Id thought of doing the scam search, but really the price of the camera wasnt that far off. Im not sure where you get your prices from, but I think I need to buy through you! ;)

Now I see how these people walk out of Morocco with $10,000 worth of carpet!

No damage done, the payment has been stopped and the card canceled just in case they try to use the info from it again, so looks like I caught it in the nick of time thanks to you.

Oh I just realized your the guy that said dont buy Sony, but you still havent told us why?
