If you want to go super-cheap plan on $45 to $55 per day not counting transportation costs. For slightly more upscale, plan on $75 per day. For a regular vacation, plan on $120 per day (not counting transportation).

Cheapest transportation methods are car (if you can return it where you started from) or train otherwise--but realize this limits you in certain cities (like Los Angeles, Orlando, Houston, or Miami) where the mass transit system is poor. The cities with good rapid transit systems or where the town is fairly small and therefore easy to get around are New York, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Seattle (no metro system to speak of, but small upscale inner-city area).

Enjoy

Oh, and as far as you being vegetarian--that used to be a problem, but it hasn't been one for at least 30 years now. Just plan to eat at Indian, Thai, or Chinese restaurants in any city and you'll be fine. You'll find at least one of these in every town in the US.

Oh, and Washington DC also has a great metro system--probably the best in the US except for New York's.
