I'm heading to NYC in 2.5 weeks, and found out today I have to give up my 4 year old machine-readable passport for a biometric one just because the US says any passports before 05/06 can't be used to enter the country. Now I have to pay $75 for the passport which can only be used for 5 years (my current one will last beyond that!!), plus I'll be losing out money by taking hours off work, having to travel and wait at the immigration authority building which is freaking chaotic, having to wait the 3 working days for the passport to be processed before I have to physically go down and pick the new one up. I can't even apply for it online cos my current passport is too new!!

AARGH!!!

Welcome to America!
If it were up to me, I'd let you use your old passport. But, immigration doesn't call me about these issues anymore because I made fun of their outfits.

Singapore, of all countries!!! Malaysians could get their passports in 3 hours if everything is in order and there is no problem with the application. :) But 3 days isn't that bad. You should ask the Americans how long it takes to get theirs.

Hi,
Are you completely sure that you need a new passport? My understanding the rules is that only passports issued after October 06 need to have the biometric chip in your passport. I found this on the US Department of State website:
Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended on or after 10/26/06 – requires integrated chip with information from the data page ( e-Passport ).
Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended between 10/26/05 and 10/25/06 – requires digital photograph printed on the data page or integrated chip with information from the data page.
Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended before 10/26/05 – no further requirements.

Hopefully this will save you some time and money!

I think sapphyre's passport is probably issued on or after 26 Oct 2006 but not an e-passport.

But she says it's four years old...........which would make it issued in 2004

Sigh...I've resigned myself to my fate of having to give up my current passport. Asked a colleague who was in LA two weeks ago and she had to get the biometric passport too. But I'm crossing my fingers and hoping i'll qualify under Machine-readable passports issued or renewed/extended before 10/26/05 – no further requirements.

Maybe I'll ask around somemore to be very sure. I've alreay got the application form, but am having a bout of conjunctivitis now so can't imagine having to take a passport photo in this state!!

Thanks everyone!
