I'd recommend not doing a tour. There's hourly trains to Katoomba which you can just hop on by yourself, and then at Katoomba it's trivial to walk to the three sisters and down the stairs (pity your legs; though there's also cable car and a train going up and down), and do all those other things you'd do on a tour - but just at your own pace, without needing to pay extra for it.

If your hostel has a tour, that might be a bit of fun. Otherwise you might be stuck on a bus with 50 Japanese.

I went with Oztrek.com.au, was $55 so great value. The itineries on the website!

My wife and I did a day trip to the Blue Mountains. You can totally do it on your own without a tour company. We took the train from Sydney to Katoomba. From there you can take a bus to the key points of interest in the area.

We enjoyed spending a day in the mountains and doing some hiking. I recommend it.

Just make sure you know the time of the last Skycar/train back up from the canyon! ;)

Just walk. I found it refreshing after months of partying in sydney. :)
Would also recommend just going without a company.
Blue mountains can be a lot colder than sydney, so check the weather.
