Hello fellow travelers! I need some trip advice and hope you will be able to help:
My friend and I are traveling to oz for 1-2 months this summer, (1 or 2 depends upon how much we can squeeze out of our budget). We'd like to spend a significant amount of time in Sydney, as well as dive the Great Barrier Reef and see the main must-see sights. So...my questions:
1. What sights, places, and adventures can we absolutely not miss while we are there?
2. Is it best (and by best, I mean cheapest) to go with a tour for a portion of our trip, or would you suggest the self-planned train pass/rental car/hostels route?
It will be cheaper to travel in Australia by yourself using the buses and trains than as a tour. Greyhound have travelpasses and they are pretty cheap and reliable.
Don't forget the summer in Northern Australia is the hot and rainy season so it's better to travel there in the winter.
First thing - when is it you consider summer?? Now ?? - Australian summer (October - March/April) or in the Australia/southern hemishphere winter (approx April - September ish)????
Is there a reason you would spend "considerable" time in Sydney?? Sydney is a great place to visit - BUT it is very very expensive for a backpacker.
If you only have maximum 2 months - then I would suggest you fly to the places you "must" see...... so you can see as much as possible. There are many "on the spot cheap" flights to be had at times - depending on where you want to go and do.........
Check sites like Virgin, Jetstar etc etc.
I am at a loss to really try and assist you until you answer the above questions..
There is sooo much to see and do - depending on what you LIKE to do - what your interests are etc.........
