Myanmar - is May a good time to go there?

Travel Forums Asia Myanmar - is May a good time to go there?

Hi,

I'll be landing in BKK on the 8th May and was hoping to hop over to Yangon and travel for roughly 10 days up to the Mandalay region - I've read that May is a terrible time to go there - does anyone have any advice? Should I just go anyway?

I'm from the UK - do I need to sort my visa from home?

Any advice is welcome

It seems the most intense heat is over by May.
Just checked it and Yangon is about 30-34 degrees, Mandalay 32-38 degrees during the middle of May.
Mandalay has about 140 mm of rain that month, which is not that much either.
I guess humidity will be your biggest 'concern' but if you don't mind that, I wouldn't see why it's a terrible time.

Yangon in May will be hot round about 30-35 C. No rain in May. Mandalay would be hotter. Beach will be the perfect suit for you in May.

Its hot, but the plus side is that there will be less tourists around...

I was there in early June and it was incredibly hot and humid so it would imagine may would be a little worse. i still had an amazing time though, and if that's the only time you can go then don't let it stop you going. as the previous post says, sometimes its good to go places when its low season.

You will need to get your visa before you arrive - this can be done from Bangkok or at the embassy in the UK before you leave. There are planty of tour operators who can arrange this in Bangkok, or you can go to the embassy yourself.

May will be very hot, its already getting that way and we have had a few showers already, due to a tropical depression over the bay of bengal. This cools it down for a few hours but then when sun comes back out it is very humid, like a sauna. There are not many tourists that time of year so you should not have any trouble finding accomodations or transportation. From yangon you can take the plane, bus or train to Mandalay. If I were you I would not miss out on Inley lake while you are here, its beautiful and you can do some treking into the hills to visit some of the villages. Its not the best time to go but is there ever a truely bad time to travel?
