I think this conversation is perfectly suitable for TP. Since its about a topic that concerns everybody. I think it is very interesting to have these kind of discussions. Especially with people from different parts of the world. The most important is that everybody respects the opinion of others and to be careful with defamatory comments (i think i made one or two as well in this thread).

Anyway Beerman, I dont really have such extreme ideas.
I think the atmosphere on TP brings out the worst in me.
Every political or religious converstation has progressed the same way. Bad feelings collect from previous conversations and make their way into present conversations and it gets worse and worse here.

Sam is right. These conversations dont sit well on this site.
I dont know why I allow it to drag me down with it. Cheap entertainment I suppose.
Anyway, I think I will join Kombizz. Not in being like him but in saying this place does not suit me. Things can only get worse if I contine to visit this site.

Bye.

Promise

Yes, I am aware this is pretty much completely off topic...

I always find it quite interesting that those who tend to stir the pot of discontent the most are also the ones who take offense at the result. The "fiercely independent" thinkers are rarely open to other's opinions and balk at any other ideas placed before them. Instead of opening their minds to alternatives, they take a defensive approach because (in their world) everything boils down to a "personal attack". Personally, I don't believe Mel let this discussion drag her down with it nor do I believe it was cheap entertainment - more of a losing battle when others didn't see it from her perspective.

Though I don't think the reference to Sam and his opinion is quite correct, I will accept that it may well be. If so, I, like Wouter, disagree. But, I don't feel such topics belong anywhere except in this forum. Religion and politics are very volatile subjects regardless of where one stands on the issues. Such topics have been posted before (as we all know well) and will pop up now and again. Realize, once they hit the "your opinions suck, no your opinions suck" banter, it's time to let it go until the next one comes along.

There's a reason, Mel, that religion, sex and politics aren't discussed in polite company. It's nothing to do with being prudish, or closed-minded, or unwilling to share and compare. It's that these 3 topics are generally unswayable. We have our own, unwavering opinions about them. And when we try to discuss, what we actually do is try to change other people's minds. Try to get them on our side. That's a fundamentalist point of view--weather you're a religious extremist, an atheist, a democrat, or a swinger. You do it, I do it, we all end up doing it, in our own way.

Time and again we end up disagreeing on TP about these things. And, really, we generally enjoy one another's company when we steer clear of these topics. So let's get back to travel and pirate ships and postcards and the like and let's get along.

For the children, you know.

I disagree, but in order to have a discussion, you need to learn how to listen first.

I disagree, but in order to have a discussion, you need to learn how to listen first.

In-depth discussions about any of these always revert to name calling, insults, misunderstandings, and frustration in general. I'd like to believe we can all talk openly about these things--and indeed we learn by listening--but the Internet does not make for open, honest discussions about things we so firmly believe in. In the end, we keep trying to convince other people of our point of view.

I don't think so.
You can lead a dhimmi to reason but you can't make him thunk.
