Just to interject, I'm reading Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth, and he makes some interesting points about religion and ego. To totally paraphrase, religion can work either of two ways: 1) it can be ego-centric (I'm right and you're wrong) or 2) it can be a way to the truth of who you are--what he calls the "I AM"--by looking inwards.

I kinda like that distinction. If everyone picked way #2 there'd be a lot less hate and suffering and intolerance and a lot more love. Which, I imagine, is what religion is for in the first place.

You have made a valid point Tina...

If all picked way #2, this would be an ideal world where everyone can live in peace and harmony but this is a distinct possibility considering the fact that "Ego" is central to human beings inherent nature.

Fine. So what's all this about Christians being pigs, etc?

James, the problem is more to do with the political condition prevailing between Islam and Christianity in some parts of Europe especially in Spain. The Muslims ruled Spain for quite some time but later they were pushed back and their influence remained confined to the southern part of Spain. The constant wars/crusades provided for all sorts of misinterpretations and hatred to gain ground, the cause of which was more political than religious.

The literal translation of many of the Koranic verses has further compounded the problem and presented a distorted version.

For a better understanding of the origin of punishment of transforming into pigs, monkey, go through the following article, especially the Chapter 3 and Chapter 4

So according to the koran, am I a pig or not?

That's all I want to know.

I heard Australia had lots of Kangaroo, but never knew pigs are so popular there

Monkeys are quite common in India which provoked the 'Harbhajan--Symonds' controversy

In my opinion Islam is not the real problem, it only serves as a justification (or vehicle).

The real underlaying problem is the unequal distribution of wealth, unequality of chances, and sheer discrimination. The so called West only thinks about it's own position in the world, and doesn't do anything to really help other countries. Countries that they in lot of cases stripped from their natural and human resources. (gold, diamonds, slavery). We are focussing much too hard on the religious extremists (which of course have to be stopped), but don't care to do anything about the real problem.

Conservative Islam (which extends from Morocco east to Pakistan) exhibits the same behavioural patterns as those of a chronic alcoholic.
An Alkie goes on a huge bender and wakes up with three day's shit in his pants. Islam goes on a six hundred year social/cultural/intellectual stagnation bender and wakes up with Wahhabism, Salafism, Jihadism and the Iranian ayatollahs as their excremental end product.

It is really sad that u know little about Islam

Perhaps a little bit of enlightenment will bring more reasoning in ur arguments
