Travel Forums North America LA - safe for a solo traveller?

I'm going to LA for a couple of weeks in June and just wondering how safe it is to go as a female solo traveller?
Are there any hostels/places to go you can recommend?

I had a female friend that lived there for several months and she said it was pretty safe... Just be aware of your surroundings and the people around you... there are some areas in and around the city that you have to be careful... hostelworld.com had a few listings for the LA area... One in Santa Monica that looked decent... Hope this helps!

It's absolutely safe. Keep your head about you, of course, but Los Angeles is relatively harmless as long as you stay out of South Central. Right now they're being patrolled by "the best police chief in the US", the same guy who gentrified Manhattan and Boston so it's really been cleaned up. I would suggest staying in the circle from Hollywood to Downtown to Venice to Zuma and back up through North H-Wood, though, to eliminate all risk. As for hostels, for a pretty cool experience I'd suggest Venice - I think I saw one down by the beach the other day that looks like a good time.

Nadine,
My friend Jane from OZ had a good time at the USA Hollywood Hostel. Right downtown Hollywood, has sightseeing tours everyday. Venice Beach also has a hostel, hard to beat right staying on the beach. Like others have said, LA is fairly safe, but there are parts of LA I would not set foot in. Let's face it, most large cities have problem areas and LA is no exception. Both hostels will tell you what areas to avoid. Have a great time, Mike
