Hello! I am planning a little trip to somewhere in Central America with a friend, for about one month (May) this year. Our main goal is to practise our Spanish and learn about local culture. We are both interested in art, nature, language and people. We are looking for advice on which country to visit or focus on, or suggestions for any good sized towns to live in for a couple of weeks and maybe take Spanish classes? We are also open to any ideas on volunteer or wage work, and tips on sights to see. If you can recommend language schools anywhere that would be great as well. Thanks!

Hi Angela,

I only went there as a tourist a few years ago but I know that quite a lot of people spend a couple of weeks learning Spanish in Antigua, Guatemala. It's a very pretty and colourful old colonial town in the highlands of Guatemala (several volcanos are nearby) and I also really liked the atmosphere when I visited. Unfortuantely can't recommend one of the language schools, but I'm sure you'll find plenty of options if you start googeling. As for accomodation you also shouldn't have problems to find a hostel. And once you're in Guatemala, definitely try and go to Tikal, one of the largest Mayan ruins in the world.

123teachme.com is a great website to find spanish schools in countries across the world. I'm going to Tecun Uman in Antigua, Guatemala in April and will be there till May. Let me know if you are in the area.

Hi there,
There is a new spanish school in Suchitoto, El Salvador where I have been living for the past 10 years. It is run by a youth association with profits going to support a high school and university scholarship program. Suchitoto is a great little colonial town that some compare to Antigua 20 years ago. If your interested check out http://www.gaesuchitoto.com or go to the schools site directly at http://www.pajaroflor.com/.
I have spoken to many students that have studied at the school and all have been very content with the program and teachers(most of whom are young university students).
Anyway if you are interested check it out and if you need more information feel free to post...
Saludos
