Hi all,

As part of a year RTW trip my boyfriend and I plan to fly from Auckland to Los Angeles - but on the way we would like to stop off for a week or two at a pacific island sometime in June 2009. I would like people's opinions as to which island to chose - we are on a fairly tight budget but basically love wildlife (particularly amphibians/reptiles) walking and to be honest would be up for most travel experiences. The islands we are trying to chose between are:

Tonga
Samoa
Fiji
Rarotonga
Tahiti

Any advice would be greatfully received

Thanks!

Well, budget wise I would skip Tahiti.
It seem that Cook Islands can be done cheap, but after a few days you might get bored.
Fiji is overdeveloped, so I guess Samoa and Tonga are your best best to have nice pacific island experience, not boring, not too expensive and a blessed mix of culture and nature.

Fiji is overdeveloped .

I doubt the poster as quoted has seen very much of Fiji at all apart from the Coral Coast.

Note that Tonga as mentioned can be very tough to travel in due to unreliable air connections.

Personally, I'd recommend Samoa. Its friendly and laid-back, and pretty cheap. You can get fale's on the beach for about USD$30/night. Its a great place to relax, and see a bit of a true Island culture :)

I'll second the Samoa recommendation, I thought it was gorgeous, great beaches and scenery and not too pricey at all.

Thanks so much for all your help - I think Samoa is currently the top runner, been doing a bit more research and looks stunning and a place I can see would be quite easy to spend a couple of weeks without getting bored....!

Thanks again

I just tried comparing the islands alltogether and tried to give some advice as well. Like I did on air travel to and from Tonga in the Travelguide. You should check it

Not true at all-you issued a blanket condemnation of all of Fiji-it's there in black and white for all to see.

Yes, but I did not say you weren't correct with your comment. I just said what I was trying to do: give someone some sort of advice based on a comparison of different possibilities to choose from. And although you probably can find deserted beaches on Fiji Islands (certainly apart from the developed parts) I made a comparison about all aspects and maybe the travellers doesn't have the time and/or the money for finding that deserted beach or whatever on Fiji.
And if I say Fiji is overdeveloped that's not a black or white thing, you are certainly right. But at least compared to the other in general it is, and it's much more on the beaten track of budget travellers. Come on, give me a break, this is a forum with opinions and advice, not a scientifical forum with truth or false.
So be a sport...try and say something nice

The Yasawa Island group in Fiji is amazing...Fly into Nadi, but dont stay there for long coz it's not very nice, and catch the yasawa flyer up to this lsland group.

On Tavewa Island there is a dive place you can get your diving certificate...it really is beautiful.

But it's all paradise around the pacific islands so i dont think you'll be too disappointed whatever one you choose.
