I don't know if it sounds amazing or frightening. They go through countries like Turkmenistan! On second thought... amazing and frightening.

There is nothing frightening about Turkmenistan, it's probably safer than many other countries in that region.

After having taken the bus from London to Berlin, Berlin to Kiev and (with breaks in between) from Shiraz to Istanbul the idea of spending any extended length on the bus when you can take the train horrifies me.

I've got to admit that the above initiary is pretty much my dream trip. Especially Morocco to Accra via Senegal or Istanbul to Bishkek via Ashgabat and Tashkent. I haven't done too many calculations yet, but their prices seem reasonable for what is on offer. I could probably do it cheaper and with a bit more comfort though by taking the train in Russia and Central Asia. If I live long enough I'll do this trip on my own - but section by section.

I guess the regime is just crazy against it's own then? I was under the impression that foreigners were not very welcome there. A friend who was working in Tajikistan told me this.

O for sure you are right about that. That Turkmenbashi guy was megalomane, but I don't know much about current political situations over there. Guess the next fool in line is president right now
Independent travellers can only get a 3-5 day transit visa so I understand, bikers might get lucky and have a 7-10 day transit visa. For all the others, there are tours....which seem good value I heard from other travellers and are not that boring at all like some might think. And visiting something else than Ashgabat, Merv and Konye Urgench is really only possible with a tour....a shame, but that's just how it is.
How is Tajikistan by the way?

My friend loved it. She said the people were the friendliest she had encountered- even (perhaps especially) the drug lords.
