I have about a week for Bali, landing in Denaspar. I'm not a total party guy, but also like to have the possibility of things to do. If you were going to Bali for the first time for a week, what cities would you stay in? Anyone have any recommendations of what would be a good property to stay at? I don't have to be bare-bones in terms of expenses, but also don't want to spend a lot. Maybe $30 or $40 a night? Thanks.

Ubud is a gorgeous little town and one that I would definitely recommend to base yourself. It is about 30 mins drive from the airport. It is very much an 'artist's town' and there are plenty of galleries and lots of lovely places to eat. There are also some great guesthouses here set in the rice fields. I stayed here two weeks - couldn't drag myself away!! Kintamani is also well worth a visit - it is the mountain area to the north of Ubud (lake/volcano kind of setting - gorgeous - stay on the lake side). I didn't really find beaches to be Bali's strong point. Of course there is Kuta - but Kuta is kind of tacky. It's a bit addictive though!! I'd recommend Legion, just up the coast from Kuta, rather than Kuta itself. It's a bit classier and the nightlife is better (but considerably more expensive). If you can spare some time, I'd definitely recommend the Gili Islands - about 8 hours away from Bali. The beaches are stunning and with the Lombok mountains in the background, it's pretty much as good as it gets.

It really depends on what you want to do during the days/evenings.
Night life, noise, shopping, markets, bars etc is around Kuta, Sanur is a quieter area which we preferred ( aged 50 ), Singaraja up north is also quieter with average beaches, Nusa Dua has the 5 star resorts.
Unless you really go outside the main tourist towns, its all pretty kitschy.
$30/40 buys you good accom with a/c, a swimming pool and should incl ABF.
Steak chips and salad for dinner in a cafe should be around $3.50.

Hi there we travelled all over bali last year in a jeep, you can hire one for $10-$15 a day and its a bit of fun driving bali style. for a week i would highly recomend ubud great little place but no beach of course as its inland. I would recomend maybe split in half a few nights in ubud and a few nights maybe in legian north of kuta a bit quiter but easy access to the main area. You dont even need to book in bali just turn up and youll be fine. we paid $6 a night for a nice double room!! with pool and AC and basic breakie so its amazing value there this was at cristmas so peak season really.
