I was planing on flying into Cairns, and then driving to Brisbane. Can I do this without too much rush as a week trip? If you had to pick out of Melbourne, Sydney, and Auckland, what would your order be in terms of favorite city? Thanks.

It is a bit rushed I guess. It would take 2 not too long days to drive from Cairns to Brisbane. Or 1 very long day of course. Distances are pretty big in Oz. There is enough to explore around Cairns to keep you busy for almost a week. So you might think of flying out of the same city southwards or to Auckland.
Haven't been to Sydney, but from the other two Melbourne has my vote. And many people here on TP think Melbourne is even better than Sydney!

Ouch, that's a really difficult question.
Sydney has the most sights to keep one entertained as a tourist. Auckland is the most beautiful city, which is my favorite for strolling through. Melbourne is the most vibrant city, with cafes and live music, and the most pleasant place to live (though not in late summer, when the flies drive you crazy). However, Sydney has the Glebe neighbourhood, which is better than Melbourne's Brunswick and Fitzroy taken together, with lots of yummy bakeries and restaurants. And Auckland can probably be seen as a halfway point between Melbourne and Sydney.

Aaargh! I don't think I could ever choose! (And in fact, on my next trip through, I will indeed visit all three again.)

Personally I'd skip Brisbane (which is a boring city) and the drive there (really, you'll be bored of the sugar cane fields after the first half hour) and spend that time on seeing another city. :)
