I'm going from Beijing to Moscow, and want to stop in Ulan Bator. Where's the best and most reliable place to buy tickets? Currently I'm in Thailand... I'm going on the move for most of the time, but if I had to provide a mailing address for the tickets I could probably do that.

Suggest you get tickets as you move along. It is not as difficult as it is made to seem.

I stayed in UB Guesthouse in Ulan Bator while i was on the same trip last March. They can get your onward rail tickets and charge a nominal fee for service.

If you're stopping in Irkutsk before moving on to Moscow, you can get your tickets to Moscow from Irkutsk Hotel as they have a rail ticket office inside again chargin a very nominal fee service fee. I didnt have any problems buying the tickets when I was there as there was a very helpful Russian lady manning the office who spoke some English.

I'd agree with NL....I just bought tickets from Beijing to Erlianhoate (border city to Mongolia) at the train station. Depending on where you want to can get point-by point tickets....trains are quite frequent between this route because of the amount of trade that goes on....I'm not sure how you'd get information in advance about train times though...

It is possible to buy tickets in Beijing. I bought one last year in some big hotel. It is about 500 meters north from Jiangumen subway station in Beijing. Sorry, I don't remember it's name.
