Hey my name is rachael!
first thanks for reading this post, im in need of some help!
Im still in the planning/saving stage of my rtw trip, setting off march 2009.
18 mnths tokyo-bangkok-thai beaches- onto oz to work 6mnth & travel west coast-then back to s.e asia and india. possibly some volunteer work in kenya and a nice big rail card for europe to home.
The only thing is im going on my own, any advise from anyone who has travelled on there own
particually women who are around my age or who i could get in contact with or who has any tips for me i would greatly appreaciate it.
thanks for any help x x
i'll be in the same boat in several months i suppose it differs from place to place. watch out for any customs, dress codes, etc, careful where you are, don't go out at night, dark alleys and all that. i was wondering about the same thing and i found this --> http://www.voyage.gc.ca/main/pubs/her_own_way-en.asp <--it's a canadian site (hence me being from said canada), but it may sort of give you an eye opener or two. it didn't help me too much; it's more or less all common sense. but you never know.
i posted a little while ago with a close question. it was about india (since that's where i'm going), and many people replied. --> http://www.travellerspoint.com/forum.cfm?thread=43688
hope it helps a bit.
good luck and have fun
I went to Oz on my own when I was 19, everyone thought I was mad and too young. But I can honestly say it completely changed my life for the better. You'll never really be on your own, there are lots of people travelling alone looking for someone else to have a meal, drink and an adventure with.
I met a girl in Alice Springs, and we travelled together for 4 months. 4 years on we're still good friends and when I mentioned to her that I'm off again in March 09 (SE Asia, Fiji and NZ) she said she wanted to come too, so we're both saving hard and encouraging each other on.
Do a bit of research and keep online with these forums etc, they're very helpful. You'll have a great time, meet some great people and have some great stories and experiences to share when you get home!

I've just finished travelling around Europe and Thailand for one year. I was 18 when I left, 19 when i returned.
I had the time of my life, and never really encountered any problems.
What sort of places are you looking at staying in? (hostels, hotels, camping, roughing it)
Feel free to send me a message, I would be glad to help you with anything that i can.
Best of luck to you!
