Hiking shoes for Nepal during the monsoon?

I'm going to Asia for three months in May, and I'll be going to lots of places where a comfortable pair of lightweight sandals will always work, but I have a problem with Nepal.

I'll be trekking the Mt Everest region, and during the monsoon. Everyone has advised me to wear heavy waterproof hiking boots for this two week period, but the thought of carrying these heavy shoes with me for three months, while only using them for two weeks is really putting me off.

Any suggestions out there? I wonder if a pair of waterproof trainer types will do. My feet are pretty tough.

I went trekking there in -23 during the winter. I had trekking boots. Don't worry I met plenty with just trainers. And if worst comes to worst, you can pick up a pair of super cheap counterits there (10 Euro) and then sell them back to a shop after.

These days I got a pair of Columbia Trail Meister II HIking Shoe, maybe you can give it a look.

These shoes feel pretty high tech and up to the job of some serious trekking. love it very much.
