hey was wondering, if i call westpac and tell them i'm a backpacker coming over in the next month, can i open an account over the phone and then have my bank here transfer funds to my newly opened account in westpac oz??

i know i need an iban number and a swift number, will westpac supply this??

i believe it only costs £20 to transfer any amount!!

is this the best option? dont really wanna carry thousands of dollars worth of travellers cheques with me, even for a few hours!! :)

i am in the same position as you and would also like info. my plan was to open one as soon as i got there. you can open one online with one of the banks, i think it the Australian national bank. also will you be applying for a tax file number?

yeah, westpac do it online anz may do. though i'm sure i read that the account needs to be activate when you arrive, to me that suggests that you cant deposit money in it til its activated!!

yip i'll be applying for a tax number, gotta wait til you arrive in oz to do that though!

If you read through Westpac's info, you can open the account online and deposit money from your current account via wire transfer. you can't withdraw money until you show up at a branch in person and show proof its you and they list various pieces of ID you can use. Id spend some time reading the web site rather than relying on anything someone said on the internet...even if it does come from here.

there's a recent thread that talked about what sounded like a better way to do it for Uk residents. An online company that deals in wire transfers and and was cheaper than a regular bank.
