Hi everybody! I just learned that I am going to Taiwan next summer for 2 months. I have the choice between going to Taipei at the National Taiwan University or in Hsinchu at the Tsing Hua University.

I've never been to Taiwan before, so I really don't know which city is the best. From what I can see on the internet, there is not that much interesting stuff in Hsinchu? What about the beaches, sights and area around both cities? I would really like to have the chance to do some hiking, as well as scuba diving :) Anyway, please somebody, give me some advice!!

Thanks a lot in advance!

Melissa

Hi Melissa,

I've only been to Taipei. If you're looking to study/intern in Taiwan I think Taipei would be a good choice as everything is easily available and transport is convenient. You could always fit in weekend trips to the outskirts and other cities for your hiking etc. The inter-city train system is apparently quite efficient, Taipei to Kaoh-Hsiung takes 3 hours.

Beware of the weather in summer though. It's typhoon season (which could dampen/ruin all your plans) and can get unbearably hot. I live in Singapore and couldn't take it when it went up to 37degC last August, ended up breaking out in heat rash and came down with a fever on my second day there.

Taipei seems a good choice sine Taiwan can be easily covered by high speed rail... so its a good base to start exploring the country... Some very lovely mountains in the middle of Taiwan - like Alishan and Yu-shan, all make for great trekking if u're interested. Kending, at the southern tip has a nice Marine Park and some beautiful windswept coasts, which is another getaway option...
