Since it'll be mid April, the flower fields will be in full bloom. Might be nice to do the Keukenhof? (I mean, if we're doing touristy, we might as well go all the way.) ;) Not really ideally situated when coming from Utrecht though, but still doable... (45-50 minute drive, I think)
Don't really know any worthwhile touristy things in Utrecht itself, other than sitting on a terrace along the Oudegracht, or maybe going up on the Dom tower.

Like a posted on the UNESCO world heritage thread: I have never been to the Rietveld Schröder house;)

That would be two first for me aswell: the Keukenhof and the Rietveld Schröder House. I also always wanted to go to the Nijntje Museum !!! (Miffy ??)

Nikki - That's what i'm afraid of. You getting drunk and trying to show off your Dutch. I can barely understand your English when drunk![

Rich, you've never seen me drunk !!!! but yes you might not be able to understand me !!

Not that I'll be able to make it *sniff*, but if I were, I would also be keen on the Dick Bruna Museum. :)

And I can also highly recommend the Rietveld Schröder Huis. It's not a large place, but some really cool stuff in there, particularly if you have an interest in architecture. Of course, if you are a fan of Rietveld, there are quite a few other buildings to look at of his in Utrecht.

I wish I could be there. I love Nijntje! Carted two almost life-sized toys back home when I was in Holland

Also missed out on the Domkerk because friend and I got there too late, but we had a good time eating in Utrecht anyway, hehe.

Enjoy your get-together!

To be fair, i start to become unable to understand you after you've had maybe 1/3rd of a pint, let alone anymore (unless, that is, i'm keeping up or way ahead of you, and then it doesn't matter anyway!)

I've also not been to the Rietveld Schröder Huis, so would add my vote to that. I'm personally not particularly bothered about Nijntje, as i never really understood the fascination when I was in NL (though admittedly I wasn't exactly the target audience, and most countries have similarly favoured alternatives and though I've been to the Keuekenhof before, but have no problem going again if people want to (though i'm slightly scared at how expensive it is now).

Guys and girls,

Here are some things to see and do in Utrecht:

  • Domtoren - Climb the belfry and one of the tallest buildings in the Netherlands;
  • Dick Bruna Huis - Visit the Nijntje (Miffy) museum;
  • Rietveld Schröder Huis - A house designed by the famous Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld. Reservation recommended! I visited this place years ago, and it certainly is nice to visit;
  • Stadskasteel Oudaen - A nice place! It's a microbrewery, restaurant and theater located on the Oude Gracht, so at crawling distance from the waterfront terraces, though I wouldn't have too high expectations from the weather around mid-April.

BTW, the Keukenhof is more than an hour away from Utrecht (read the directions on their website), but worth visiting if you have never seen Japanese tourists with cameras before. And they also have flowers in bloom around mid-April. If you're going their by public transport, which you probably are, I recommend going their early to avoid the crowds and rent a bicycle at the railway stations in Leiden or Haarlem (Heemstede perhaps). It makes a nice and easy ride through the fields of the Bollenstreek.
