Last hour of work.

Travel Forums General Talk Last hour of work.

In an hour I will be walking out of my job of the past 8.5 years.

all day long I've been getting the negative questions of, "what's in Australia?", " Why you going there?", "Why NZ?"

most people are cool but at least 6 people have asked me "why?" with a real negative tone.

I just don't get it, why are people so defensive?

Yay for you! Congrats in leaving your job.

I have 29 days, 3 hours and 33 mins before I leave mine.

29 days, 3 hours and 7 mins now.

When I quit my last job, I think I started counting down from about 50 days left!

They're negative because they think life is about being miserable and giving up on their dreams.

Just nod sympathetically and then clap your hands like a 5 year old.

Have fun!

Because they can't see themselves doing anything else but what they are doing right this minute. Some people see travel as an adventure while others view it as scary or boring or both. I know people who have never been to Chicago (2 hours away) because it's "the city" and bad things happen there.

Personally, I have found with the friends and acquaintances that take the negative approach, they're not actually happy with their own lives. Somewhere in their subconscious, they tend to think, "I'm not happy and have to deal with this dull, mundane life - what makes you think you can go see the world". If you really want to make a statement, send them all post cards from NZ saying "Wish you were here!"

You should ask them back, "why not?" :)

I totally agree with what Isadora said. i have experienced loads of negativity about my travels, and I also found that, for the same reasons, many people weren't interested in what I had done once i got back. Jealousy definitely plays a part for a lot of people, and others would love to do it but haven't the courage or their circumstances/finances don't allow it, so they feel that they have to knock you down to make themselves feel better.

your trip sounds great - have a fantastic time, and make sure you upload loads of great photos to answer those negative questions :)
