hey,
there is a harvestline number in australia u can contact. type in harvest line in search box. they can tell you where to go to get work. i fruitpicked for 4 months
margaret river (western australia) is lovely and conditions good. hostel called Intown Backpackers can help u arrange work.owner is lovely.
also fruitpciked in Mildura ( Victoria lots of work but be warned of greedy working hostels that take all yr money and dont get u work) i stayed in a hostel there called Oasis Backpackers-would say best hostel there but is expensive.
fruitpicking hard work but well worth it and i got accepted for my 2nd year visa. make sure u get all your work signed by the farmers and their ABN numbers.
unless u are really fast u wont make much moeny from fruitpicking so my advice is to just make enough money to cover yr self, do yr three months, meet some amzing people, have a laugh and experience real australia. its not just a means to an end!
good luck
lindz xxxxxx

You should also check out WWOOFing, google it... Its more for people who want to work in exchange for accommodation and meals, but there are some places that will pay as well... Most of the places listed are farms, so while including plenty of harvesting type work there are also many jobs which involve animals, nanny'ing (childcare) and general house keeping and odd job/handy person type work.

How much do you actually earn from fruit picking. How much fruit would you need to pick to earn a decent amount?

it varies, but the answer is unfortunately "not much" (ie. how much you get paid)
Some places will pay you by the hour, some will pay you by weight, others will pay you by how many "crates" or "buckets" or "boxes" you fill and some will pay you according to how many individual fruits/vegetables you actually pick.

I do know that around north Queensland when picking banana's (around Tully, Innisfail and surrounding areas) the average wage for a field worker is about $18 an hour.. which is actually pretty good money for fruit picking.. although it is hard work - bunches of bananas are REALLLLLY heavy and are often home to snakes and spiders and rats . but as we say here's in OZ "you'll be right mate!"
