Hi guys,

Here's the plan

June 6th - Hong Kong
Overland through China to
Laos
->
Vietnam
->
Cambodia
->
Thailand
->
Malaysia
->
Singapore

This whole route will be taken overland. However I'm sure I read on here in a thread that there are currently problems at the Thai / Malaysia border & therefore it'd be better to get a flight.

Also, I'm having trouble finding a border crossing into Laos from China.

Would you recommend doing all of this overland or flying part of it. Also, if you have any info on whether to go by train or bus on each part that'd be great.

  • still can't believe how good this board is!*

There's only one crossing Laos/China at Boten/Mengla. Buses from Luam Tham Na go to Mengla and vice versa. I believe you can also get a bus all the way from Kunming to Vientiane.

The problems on the Thailand/Malaysia border are on the Eastern side, though no tourists have been targeted at any crossing. If you're particularly worried, there's a fun crossing by boat on the West side from Satun to Langkawi island then to Penang. There's certainly no need to fly.

Sorry I can't be more specific but... I would use the train as much as you can for a number of reasons:-
(1) It's safer
(2) It's cheeper
(3) More relaxing
(4) erm... It's... erm... safer!
