Really need to know if €4000 would be enough for me and my hubby to do the following:
1) Trans Mongolian railway ( although private room)
2) Planning to stay in Beijing for a week
3) Go on to Vietnam by train
4) Tour Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos
The problem we are having is to find a way of getting back to Austria cheaply after the trip. Any suggestions?
Could you be a little more specific and I will try to help you. How long is your total holiday? will you be staying in 6star hotels etc, 4000 euros could be more than enough or way too little, all depends what you want to do?
well looking at 8 weeks or so , nope definitely doesn't have to be posh accommodation, we don't drink alcohol.
Also need tips on best way to get into that area - we would like to do the transiberian railway but then a return single flight is often expensive.
Let me get some 'rough' costs together for you (I am on China time) so off to bed soon. I think your biggest expence will be Beijing but I will come back to you in the morning. I think you will be ok on 4000 Euro though!
I'm thinking of doing a very similar thing in the summer.....
Fly London>Cologne>Moscow (cheap on German Wings)
Moscow to Beijing
Flights to London from Hong Kong single seem quite cheap (£170ish) so was hoping to go home from there.
I've got about 5 1/2 weeks- reckon its doable? Maybe in about £2500-£3000 with hostels/overnight trains and cheap food and drink...any suggestions?
There is a lot of info on the trans mongolian in the wiki guide so you should take a look there. Merry man your trying to cover a ton of ground. Look at map and find Xi'an then locate Siem Reap, that is some major distance and some very remote areas (if you don't plan on flying). I did a trip from Singapore to Hanoi a few years ago over 6 weeks and i felt super rushed. I skipped Malaysia, and Thailand was only BKK (for 1 day) and the islands for a week. if you plan to fly out of Hong Kong maybe stick to the south, or catch a cheap flight from Beijing to Cambodia then work your way north to hong kong and stick to southern and south western China. Just make sure to get a multi entry Chinese visa, a little more expensive but worth it.
Mimi you might want to considering visiting Mongolia. I have been all over Asia and Mongolia was one of my favorite countries. Also this summer (sometime in august) in Western mongolia is a full solar eclipse which would be pretty cool to see. Maybe save south east asia for another time and focus on north east asia instead?
Thanks for your responses
Generally in Vietnam, Laos , Cambodia - can the US Dollor be used for payments for things?
any tips etc would be most appreciated :-)
