So it turns out that I'll probably be starting out in the south island when I leave for my trip this July. Which is probably a good thing cuz I heard the south is a way better place to be during winter. But my question is.......when I look at pictures of Queenstown during winter time, there doesn't seem to be any snow on the ground. Do they only get snow on the mountains??? If there's not snow on the ground, I'm sure it's still very cold during winter there. The more research I'm doing on the area, the more excited I am to go there!!! I wasn't too sure about it at first but now it looks cool!!! Oh, and also, did any other traveler's have trouble finding work there??? It doesn't seem like there is that much work available in that area. Cheers!!!
Both times i have been in queenstown during the winter there was only snow right up in the mountains, not in the town or even up some of the hills nearby. my friends went down there and found work pretty easily in hotels and bars etc so you should be ok if you are there during the ski season.
When I was living in Queenstown for a couple of months during winterseason a few years back, it snowed once or twice in the town during the 3.5 months I was there. It still got fairly cold at night (the coldest was around -7 °C/19.4 °F) but the days were usually above 0 °C/32 °F. As for work, there's plenty of jobs going and we had no problems finding work in hospitality. Just make sure you arrive before the season really starts, that will give you a few more options.
when does the season really start?
The ski season normally starts in the beginning of June. But it has been getting later in recent years due to global warming.
There isn't normally much snow on the streets in Queenstown just on the mountains.
Awesome!!! Thanks for the info, people. Anyone wanna comment on the night life there???
Queenstown nightlife is legendary, especially during winter season. There's plenty of bars, pubs and nightclubs, so you definitely won't get bored .
pretty good from what I experienced of it - it's a bit of a party town and all the backpacker buses stop there, so there's always loads going on.
It's been a few years since I was in Queenstown but it is definitely the place to party. I lived there for about four months or something and it was just the best time ever, there tons of different pubs and bars so close together you can bar hop all night or just find one you love and stay there. Man did I have some crazy times in Queenstown.
Oh, how exciting!!! I can't wait to get there. I hope I can find a job so I can stay there for at least a few months. And barhopping is ALWAYS fun.
