im going to hong kong for the first time next year with a friend and youth hostels would be the ideal option for us as we are on a tight budget. however ive been told that we wouldn't want to do this as they are rife with cockroaches and to fork out for somewhere more expensive.
has anyone stayed there who can recommend what we do? ive never seen a cockroach and dont know how serious it would be to stay in a room with them. would drapping mosquito nets over the beds help?
Unfortunately, if you are going to be a traveller, you are going to get to know cockroaches quite well!
They like hot and humid places. In Australia houses and apartments are regularly sprayed and traps left to keep them at bay, but they are more common in Queensland where it is warmer. Some of the locals even call themselves after them!
It depends entirely on the establishment you stay in. If the owners pride themselves on cleanliness, then you may be fine, but otherwise, the place could be full of them.
They like the dark, so they tend to hide until you turn the light off!
A mozzie net would help, but you'd have to be sealed in it to be certain.
Did you know that cockraches would survive a nuclear war? Tough little buggers.
Make sure you have a good hard shoe to whack em with.
Depending on your budget, you could look at sharing a hotel room instead - might work out better and cleaner.
The cockroaches in HK are very, very big.
They run quickly and fly.
I propose you an alternative to the Chungking, Mirador Mansions & youth hostels on Nathan Rd sometimes not very clean
