Hi there

Just after a quick yes or no with this one based on your past experience...

We are looking at renting a camper van for the South Island in New Zealand, about a months hire in total. I have set us a budget of £70 ($176 NZ) per day for the 2 of us for our entire 2 months in NZ. The camper I am looking at is £38 per day which will leave £32 a day for food, petrol etc. We are expecting to cook on the camper cooker, have the occasional beer and do a few activities so nothing too extravagant.

Is this realistic or am I dreaming that we will get by on this? It doesn't seem too bad to me but I could be wayyy out

Oh and while I am here has anyone ever used cheapmotorhomes website to book their camper and was it ok?

Many thanks

Sophie

I just got to NZ a couple of days ago and bought a van, so I've been looking at budgets a bit too. From what I saw of rentals your about right there. The distance you drive each day is going to be the variable with cost of petrol. currently its $1.75ish a litre, so use that and your average distances to work out the rest of your budget from there.

32 pounds a day is about 90 ish new zealand dollars.
I am a kiwi and i would guess that this would be plenty. Maybe looking at 20 dollars a night for camp grounds, maybe up to that much again for food (on average between some nights cooking your own and some nights out/fish and chips on the beach) so that leaves you quite a bit for petrol and sightseeing. I'd say you have planned it around about right.
If you stay in your campervan in free sights or on the side of the road you should be sweet for a bit more money too
have fun!
