I am travelling into the States soon and only have a one way ticket as I don’t know how long ill be staying for so I haven’t booked a ticket to leave (it will be within 90 days as the tourist visa states). Will it be way less stressful getting through customs if I have a ticket showing that im leaving the country or will it not matter??

You must have a ticket out of the country (or some other unspecified way to prove that you'll leave the country within 90 days again), otherwise you won't be allowed in. Apparently you won't even be able to board the flight to the USA, but if you do manage, they'll send you packing on the next flight back (if you're lucky and not being locked up for a couple of days first), and you'll never be able to use a visa waiver again.
Yes, this sucks - but that's US immigration for you nowadays. :/

There was a post about this just a few days ago, actually. You really must, must, must have a return ticket. We had to buy a return ticket for my boyfriend at the airport as they weren't going to let us board--or, if they did, we were informed he could very well be interrogated, fined, and shipped home. And we were only going THROUGH the U.S. Don't play games with them. Dot all your i's and cross your t's.

Yes, It is the airline is not allowed to board you if you do not have your return ticket. They would be fined.
