They say a year break is a long time, has anyone ever just set off on a RTW thing not planning on returning? Even if you're not sure exactly where you would go once the year is up. Ever done it?

Actually I've read that you can survive on $25 a day or less while backpacking. And coincidentally me and my freind plan on doing exactly that next summer... Travel around the world with no real plan of when we'll return but hey I'm sure people have done it before. If anyone has done this I wonder if they could comment and help me out lol.

I don't know if this counts but after my trip, I'm home for Christmas and I'm pretty sure that's the last time my family will see me for a while unless they come visit me or something keeps me here for the two weeks I'm back.

Yes, well I'm planning on doing something of the sort, basically I've got a work visa for OZ starting this August and after the year is up I hope to get a second work visa for aus, head over to NZ for a month in Jan 2010 for some trekking and meeting up with pals from the last time i was there, then I'll go back to aus and save up money then I want to go up through asia and see how far my money takes me. I have an idea of everywhere I want to go and what I want to see but no real plan... just a dream :P

Lots of people head off with no plan to come home.
I did that when I was 23 - got tired of school, didn't have a job or any plan in life so I set off with the plan of returning home only when I was ready. I lasted 3 1/2 years before I went home for a couple months.

I'm 22. I quit my job to travel. I have a personal philosophy that it's only a career if you love what you do. So right now, my career of travelling (without any money coming in) is it for me. I've done well for myself which is why I can afford to travel. I don't want to grow up just yet.

Has anyone ever done some course or something in another country that allowed them to take up a new career and move somewhere else?

Well I planned that on my RTW I hit a chance on cheap housing last year in Oz and that'd be me sorted there as Im sick to the teeth of life in Ireland, but it hasnt happened and here im back in Ireland over a year later but this time im making solid plans for it to happen.

I also kinda had to come home as my ticket ended up back here 12 months later. Im a bit undecided sometimes- I had a job offer there in the mines too but I chose to finish seeing the other 6 or 8 countries left on my ticket after Oz before I decided to settle anywhere - and still dont feel anymore settled being back here either.
