Hey guys, I am a 19 year old american guy looking to travel the world for a year or more. I have virtually no money to put down for my trip but I figure I'll figure it out as I go. I wanted to know if anyone has experience travelling great distances for long stretches of time with virtually no starting money. I really don't have any plans on returning to America either I hope to just get away and blaze my own trail.
I want to experience the world in a first person way. I want to be exposed to different cultures, religions, and customs and most of all I want to be independant. If I could get advice on whether or not this is possible, or how to go about doing it, I would appreciate it. I want to leave this summer or next summer.
Also I'm looking for a travelling companion. I'm pretty easy going and am looking for someone who shares my ambition to see the world.
I travelled NZ once with very little money, well I started off with a couple thousand but quickly blew it on booze and extreme sports, then spent the rest of my year there working and partying and every few months I'd scrape up enough money to jump somewhere else and get another job, and my parents loaned me a lot of money and my credit card.. so I'd say don't do it that way.
But now I'm older and hopefully a little bit wiser and I'm four months away from leaving on another tip, on which I will embark with not a lot of cash, depending on how much I make in the next four months. Luckily I'm starting in Australia where I have a friend, a place to say, and a work visa but that I want to try and see Asia, Africa, Europe, basically see how long I can stay on the road.
I think it's definitely possible to travel with very little money, I'd say look into stuff like Wwoofing, couch surfing, see if there's any volunteer programs or something where they'd give you food or accommadion, try and make friends in other countries, find some kind of skill you could do for people to get paid for just casually, or teach english. or um I was on roadjunky a while ago and I think they had some ideas for how to stay on the road. they actually have all kinds of crazy travel ideas, i don't know how realistic some of them are but I think it's a cool place to look around.
Definately sign up for couchsurfing (google it, or i think its couchsurfing.com?)
Its well worth it.
I am in the same situation as you are! When do you intent to go?
ummm probably either this fall or the summer of 09... what are ur plans as far as travel ideas?
