hallo all, i'm gonna be in china this summer, tryin to work out some vague travel plans.
i want to go to tibet and possibly overland trip to nepal if time allows.
firstly the travel pass for tibet: where do i get one of those, how much do they cost and how long does it take to process? (i will be travelling on a chinese passport prob, but will be travelling with friends who are on british passports.)
i will probably be getting the train line to lhasa from either chong qing or cheng du.. will i be able to arrange travel pass from those places?
After May 1, you can go to Tibet, but you'd better ask China travel agent.
There are two kinds of permits for traveling in Tibet: the entry permit (TTB permit) and the Alien's travel permit (PSB permit).
TTB Permit - Tibet Entry Permit
- When you fly from any city to Lhasa you will need to show this permit when you check in at the airport. Furthermore, whenever you buy a flight to Lhasa you need to show this permit. TTB permits are also needed by groups traveling by Land Cruiser but this will be arranged by the travel agency organizing the trip.
SB Permit - Alien's Travel Permit
- If you want to go further to the "unopened" areas, you need an Alien's travel permit issued by PSB of Tibet. It is called "Alien's Travel Permit" or "PSB permit".
- if you only stay in Lhasa city, you only need Tibet Entry permit, also you can travel by yourself.
- no tourism agency can sell you permits only.
[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please... ]
I put some more information about this issue on the other thread you posted: tibet to kathmandu overland?
Hope it helps. I imagine travelling on a chinese passport will make things a little easier for you to travel to Tibet.
thanks for all the advice everyone and best of luck!
