I'm thinking of doing about 5 weeks this summer travelling from San Fran down to San Diego, nipping over to Vegas in between...I was just wondering what is it like to travel alone on d west coast? Do hostels cater for solo travellers? Is it difficult to meet up with other travellers over there? Don't want to be regarded as a complete freak travelling on my own...might sound silly but it's coz I've never done America at all, whereas if it was Europe or Asia I'd kinda now wat to expect. Any help apprecited!

im doing the exact same thing in spetember only for 9 weeks. My friend is joining me for the 1st 2 weeks but then im on my own for the remaining 7. The hostels ive booked so far are HI hostels and yes they do cater for solo travelers. Im sure youll have no probs making friends because lets face it everyone you share a dorm with is in the same boat really

5 weeks in california? Thats a long time.. I'd start further north in vancouver and work my way down to san diego with all that time..

You'll likely meet other travelers in hostels. If you wanna meet locals you'll have to venture out a bit on your own.. Its a fairly friendly state ;)

I think 5 weeks isn't too long for Cali, but it might be good times to hit up Vancouver and/or Seattle, just depends. I'm not sure about the hostel bit, but traveling solo in the U.S. isn't that odd. Also, sad but true, Americans tend to be overly intrigued by the Irish, so I'm sure that will help you out
