Im returning to Thailand after a amazing experience last summer. I didn’t think much at all of Phuket but apparently it’s very beautiful.. should I give it a second chance??

I wouldn't. I didn't like it at all. Of all the places I've been in Thailand after numerous trips, Phuket is far and away my least favorite place in the country. There's just so many better places you could go. If you are just looking for a beautiful beaches than Phi Phi beats Phuket by a mile in my books, as do the beaches on the Krabi mainland. Even Koh Tao and Phagnan par Phuket for beauty and have a much nicer atmosphere.

Beaches can be found in many countries in the world! Why not skip Phuket this time around and see some of the other parts of Thailand!

First, if you avoided seeing Bangkok on your last trip and flew direct to Phuket - stop in Bangkok for a few days in the beginning of your trip and end up there one final night before you go home. This will give you some time to see the city and take some tours to the nearby attractions. (Bridge on the River Kwai, Ayuthaya, Floating Markets, Safari World and a national park like Khao Yai.) Stop in at a travel agent and check out their list of tours. A final night in Bangkok will give you another chance for shopping and remove any worry about your connecting flight breaking down and you missing your ride back home.

In Chiang Mai you can visit the night market, see the Long Neck women, visit hill tribes. You can take a tour up to Chiang Rai and see the Golden Triangle area too! You could take the overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai and save paying for another night in a hotel in Bangkok too!

If you want to include some cheap beach time you could stay a couple days in Jomtien near Pattaya. Bus ride to Pattaya is only around 120 baht (Ekamai bus station, Sukhumvit.) Or take a taxi for 1000 baht to 1500 baht from Bangkok. Hotels are cheaper in Pattaya and Jomtien than Phuket. (Beach at Pattaya okay for sunbathing, walking, shopping, eating and partying but no good for swimming! Jomtien is better for beach type swimming, most hotels over 800 baht probably have pools to use.)

Good luck.
