I worked as a temp for 8 months to save. It seemed like a really long time, but it was totally worth it - plus it meant when I came back I had a really varied CV which has helped a lot. We were due to set off on 1st feb 07, but to make a bit more money we pushed it back to 1st march. And then got an interest free credit card which paid for the extra week we stayed in the USA!
I've been saving since last August. we are leaving in December for Asia and South America. These are my ways of getting extra money:
-We are renting our spear bedroom to a student. It brings $200 per week so it's definitely worth even if it isn't too great to have a stranger in my home
-I'm selling all the stuff I don't need or don't use on ebay. I've sold about 30 items so far and I made $700
-I'm putting all the money for the trip in a separate savings account. It growths by 8% per year
-I read tones of books and I used to buy them but now I only read books from the library. Pretty big savings
-I stopped buying newspapers and magazines and I read them online
-I never take taxi
-I only eat out twice a month (used to be once a week)
-I never buy lunch, always make my own at home and take it to work
-about 6 months ago my boyfriend told his boss he was quitting and this was enought to convince his boss to give him 20% pay rise. We put this whole additional amount to our 'career break' account
-I completely stopped buying cloths etc
well I hope I can convince my wife to stop buying clothes huh... hehehe...
well, I guess having your paychecks in $ figure sure makes it easier to save enough to take a round the world trip... man! I'd need to work more than 10x to save enough 'extra' money for such a trip...
