This government website has pretty good information and will probably answer all of your questions:

If you plan to live in Oz on a permanent basis I think you can reasonably expect to earn just over $50K per year at the moment.

We have just had our house painted inside and out and paid $30 per hour, cash in hand, for the job. We provided paint and scaffolding etc.

if you are on a working holiday then your best bet is to head for the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. You could try and pick up a bit of cash in hand work yourself or, alternatively, get a job with a contractor. There seems to be a great shortage of tradesmen at the moment - they even advertise for tradesPERSONS !!.

You will,of course, need a work visa.

depending on experience and how hard a worker you are, expect $24-$30 dollars an hour.
