How far in advance would you have to book 1 of these hostels if you were planning on staying for next few months?

sydney yha tends to be popular as close to city. ru planning on staying in that hostel for next few months? that would be really expensive. i stayed there 16 mths ago and it was 30 dollors a nite then. u better of trying to rent a flat or stay in a hostel in a cheaper area-manley, bondi, newtown. yha is one of the more expensive. this hostel shouldnt be that buys this time of year-nov-jan is teh busiest time.
hope that helps

They're both pretty busy actually, although like lindz24 pointed out, this isn't the busiest time of year (yet). Staying there for a long time would be mighty expensive so I'd also go for a flat or something similar after the first week or two. There'll be plenty of others looking to do the same and you can always extend once you get there (you might want to stay in a different area too after a few weeks, so not tying yourself down for too long is always a good thing).

It will depend on your exact dates because if by "the next few months" you are referring to early-mid July, you are going to struggle to get a spot anywhere in Sydney now. Most places have been booked out since September for these dates and the ones that haven't are the places around Kings Cross region around 3 stars. The Hillsong Conference and also World Youth Day are on in this time frame so you need to make sure that if you are planning on staying around those dates you enquire and see if they have any space left. I have been having a fair bit of trouble finding accommodation for people travelling to Sydney for dates from about 4 July - 19 July. Outside of those dates it shouldn't be too bad.

I meant probably May/June, money doesn't matter, I'm just talking about availability.

If you are having trouble finding accomodation during this time, Glebe YHA still has beds.
try or email them directly.

I'd say book in advance even if just to stop any worries.

But then again if money doesnt matter, hotel your way around :D

I'm really just looking for the best place to meet other travellers to go with?

I'd say the Glebe location would be better for that since it's a slightly smaller hostel. If I'm not mistaken (think I'm thinking of the right one in Glebe) it has a roof terrace where a lot of the guests sit in the evenings. We actually have a development launching in the not too far future which is basically made for the exact scenario you describe. But I don't think it will be ready in time for this trip :(

Sam I Am, the one you described is Glebe YHA. Great place to meet other travellers, and the rooftop is awesome. Especially the BBQ's on friday nights. Last I heard they still had beds available and good longer term rates too for YHA members
