I'm finishing up my plans for the trip and started the process to get my Indian visa. It turns out that the "consulate fee" (i.e. visa fee) is $78 and the fee for the company who processes the visas for the consulate (outsourced) is $50- bringing the total to $128. This is ridiculous. I can't even believe how expensive this is, considering that is more than I will pay for the three other visas I will get COMBINED, by a wide margin!
Am I missing a cheaper method?
All applications for Indian visa in the US have been outsourced by the embassy to Travisa. The service fee charged is only USD13 per application.
Thanks Hein, but this is really strange, because this is exactly the information I found to begin with, but this weekend, when I was filling out all the paperwork, I found something else. I mean I went to what I thought was the same website (I googled Travisa) and found this same visa application, but there was another form to fill out just for Travisa. This is where it said I needed to pay a total of $128. I was appalled, and immediately called the number available in the New York office. The woman who answered the phone, re-iterated the fees and prices to me, and insisted it was what everyone pays. Everyother place I went to said $73, so that is why I was so suprised by this way higher number.
Was it a scam? Does anyone else have any other information.
I'm going to pursue this further. Here are the links I found that say $50. Here.
Here is where is says the consular fee is $78.

You see, the domain name may be travisa.com, but it's not the REAL Travisa.
Check out the Consulate General of India in New York and Indian Embassy in Washington websites. Both have links to the genuine Travisa website, which is the one I gave you here.
Wow, thanks. So it's a scam then.
