Hi,
Was justing looking for a photo about aruba, when I found this one. It is placed in the Aruba gallery, but it should be in the Netherlands Antilles one.
Just to let you know;)
Cheers!

right Utrecht
but this happens many times that people describe the country wrong or the use there home country and not the country where they took the photo.
If I see this and know the place or no for sure that the place description is wrong I send a PM to the member, specially if I would like to feature the photo.
the Curacao foto is not featured

cheers
Marlis

Yeah, as marlis said, there's a lot of photos which have the wrong country. Just look at Afghanistan (first country in the alphabet). At a quick glance, 8 of the 38 photos in that country are really photos of Afghanistan.

But really, what's surprising here isn't that some people don't label their photos correctly, but rather how few photos are wrong labeled. I mean, there's currently over 200,000 photos here on travellerspoint, and probably 400-800 (complete guess; though slightly educated through long experience, so it'll be at least in that order of magnitude) have the wrong country assigned. That's less than half a percent, or in other words, more than 99,5% of all photos here on travellerspoint are assigned to the correct country. I seriously doubt any other photo sharing website out there has such accuracy.

Ok, thanks. Didn't know it was not possible for moderators to change this when noticed.

Ok, here I am again and before I get a reply of what is going well about tagging the countries etc. I apologize for nagging

But have a look here and tell me if it can be changed. Taffski is around sometimes, so one could send a PM, or maybe I should

I mean, I know that things are going well in general, but personally I think when featuring photos of a country (that is Saint Helena) while it is Tristan da Cunha is not right, is it? Or is the title wrong and is it Saint Helena.

Wikipedia says "[Tristan da Cunha] is a dependency of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, 2173 km (1350 miles) to the north." (and our own travel guide agrees), so it's not exactly wrong.

On the other hand, we do list Tristan da Cunha as a separate country, so yeah, technically I guess that photo shouldn't be featured under Saint Helena. I'm not going to unfeature it, though. So the best course of action for you would probably be to PM Taffski and ask him to fix this on his end.

Thanks. I did.

I am not asking this only because of the photography part, but mainly because of the possibility to have a better looking travel guide as well.
Another example I just found for example was the fact there were not features photos of Guernsey, tagged as Guernsey. But a quick look came up with a few nice photos which were featured but the photographer tagged it UK. Technically not right even, but in the Guernsey page there was no photo at all because an automatic [ photo| Guernsey ] added no photos, because the photo has to be under the right Guernsey link.
I added it manually right now by typing the right photo number.

What I still don't understand, is if there is some kind of rule on TP which says that a moderator is not allowed to change the tagged country without contacting the owners of the photo? It's not that it has something to do with copyright does it?

Again, it is just meant to have a better Travelguide basically.

It's not just a rule, it's simply technically impossible for us as moderators to make such changes. We can feature, unfeature and delete photos, and that's it.

Which I'm very grateful for, as I think it's a very dangerous thing as a moderator to be crossing the line from "keeping out spammers (and marking a photo as really good looking)" to "making changes to information entered by a regular user". There can be edge cases where a user has very deliberately marked a photo as belonging to a certain country (for example for travel map integration, where a photo is associated to a trip based on country) - and we as outside moderators really shouldn't be in the position to mess such things up. Remember that in the end, the photo upload ability is there for the individual users. Yes, travellerspoint as a whole derives value from having them (with the featured photo galleries and the travel guide and all such other things), but most users don't individually care about that; they just want a place to store their photos and show them to family, and some would justifiably be upset if some outside people would suddenly go and change information they put in. (Just imagine the next steps down the slippery slope: Should we correct typos people made in the title of the photo? Should we correct those typos if they're really sms-sp34k? Should we correct photo titles if they convey a political message we disagree with?)

I understand it can be frustrating when you keep running into these edges cases while working on the guide - but the way to fix things is really for you to interact directly with these other people who uploaded the photos - not to go up in the 'hierarchy'.

(Do note that this is my personal opinion. For all I know Sam and Peter would actually favour the ability to fix just country information.)

Sander is right. To me a lot about not making an edit button for moderators on photo information is about that slippery slope it opens up. But I totally know where you're coming from Utrecht. I've PM'd members before asking if something was meant a certain way in a photo title/description. I've also pointed out to members that I think the location might be incorrect and often they'll change it.

On a positive note regarding Guernsey, it looks like Mikey B was reading this thread and added some amazing shots to instantly create a beauty of a Guernsey gallery :)

Actually I PM'd him as well, and although he did not change the other photo, he sure added some really nice photos...shame that the watercompetition is already done
