Hello!

I've just been reading all the other threads from frightened travellers which made me feel even bloody worse! I'm really excited but really dreading it on the other hand. I'm so scared im not going to have enough money. I'm going with Ozintro aug 4th 08 so they will help me find a job so that should be fine. Whats the average wage for casual work ie bar work, waitressing etc? I'm not bothered what i do, just as long as i can stay out there. (well except fruit picking, not a great fan of fruit!) The oz intro site suggests i have £200 per month i intend to stay there, i was a 12month whv but only plan to stay for 4 months so ive saved 1500 just incase. Am i being silly wasting my 12month whv only going for 4 months? how much is it to stay in hostels and to eat? Clearly i havent got a clue what im doing and would love some reassurance that im doing the right thing and i will survive and wont have to busk or worse..go home. many thanks! Kiri x

Well when i was out in Aus the hostel alone cost me $199.50AUD per wk. And at christmas time they take away the wkly rate, so it went up to $250AUD. But i was lucky cause i worked at the hostel for cheap accomidation and free good, I'm easy ha ha. Anywho, over 3 months i spent $7000AUD that around £3700 i think. Lots of people dont use there whole 12 months visa, so its nothing new, if you are planning on working right away, then £1500 should be alright, then again i met some people they came with like €500.00 and still managed to sort work out and everything. bar work is alright, but you need an RSA responsible service of alcohol. As for food, forget our big stores like tesco and asda, you will have coles or woolworths and they are not very big. I spent about 20-30AUD per wk on food, but ended up in a group of people and we all made good togeather.

Very important, dont get to relaxing in Sydney, you'll never get out, thats what i did and im going back in Aug to do my seasonal work and get my extention, failing that ill get the WHV for NZ and start again.

Dont worry about being along, all the people in the hostel are in the same position as you, and feel the same. I started meeting people after 3 wks, it is hard sometimes as there is only so much you can do on your own. It only hit me i was travelling half way around the world when i was on the plane over London, hope this helped.

Hi Kiri

Wages for bar work varies between about $AUD17 - $25 p/h depending on where you are and what experience you have. Jason is right - you more often than not require your RSA to get bar jobs (at least decent paying ones). If you are lucky your work will pay for it, if not you are looking at abou $200.00.
If you plan to eat out all the time and don't buy any groceries food costs will add up pretty quickly as a decent meal in an ordinary cafe will cost about $15.
There is a chain of supermarkets called ALDI (don't know if you have them or not) where you can usually get your food on the cheap compared to the other supermarkets because you have to bring your own grocery bags and pack them yourself.
Also at the moment Brisbane seems to be a bit cheaper for accommodation compared to Sydney and Melbourne, which is where a lot of travelers go to look for work. Im sure you will soon meet up with many people doing the same thing - you might be able to share grocery bills etc which would cut costs.

Good luck - you will have a blast!

This has really made me feel A LOT better about my trip to Australia :)

I don't know exactly how much money I'm taking with me, but I doubt it will be much more than you. I plan on working most (if not all) of the time I'm there, so I'm happy to read that other people have done it and survived!

The RSA costs around 65-85AUD, a friend of mine done it, and they put his name on the certificate before he had even started the questions.

thanks everyone for replying! ive got myself a second job (lord knows why) to help boost my funds so that if i dont get work straight away or if something goes wrong i always have something to fall back on besides the trusty credit card!
i'll more than likely be working doing bits and bobs for most of it, it'll keep me busy and i'll hopefully mix more with other travellers because if i didnt work..i really wouldnt socialise and would end up wasting a visa!
thanks again everyone !x
